Innovative approach to popularise goat farming as a means of livelihood

The Solution
NABARD established ‘goat banks’ in association with the State Government of Kerala. In a Goat Bank, women are given goats instead of cash as loan, which they repay from sale of goats.
Rural women were organised into Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) and training provided to them on goat farming .
Convergence facilitated for subsidy and finance.
The Impact
Goat farming now an established tool for economic empowerment and livelihood.
Goats are now de facto ATMs.

Integrated Tribal Development

Tribal families of Agali Gram Panchayat, Attappady, a backward block of Palakkad district, Kerala
The Challenge
Bringing tribal families into the mainstream by improving their standard of living through creation of income-generating assets
The Solution
In the first five year project, NABARD sanctioned a grant of Rs 247 lakh in 14 hamlets of Agali Gram Panchayat covering 557 tribal families.
Community drinking water sources were rejuvenated and horticultural crops such as areca nut, cashew, nutmeg and amla were cultivated. Goats and cows were provided to farmers.
In the second five year project, NABARD sanctioned a grant of Rs 842 lakh covering 1,800 acres and 2,000 families.
The Impact
Tribal families which were earlier wage earners, now till their own land.
Income supplemented through intercropping.
Medical camps, health and hygiene programmes, awareness programmes on parenting and de-addiction conducted.
